With Fifty Shades of Grey making both the #1 Bestseller list on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble, I have to wonder where this will lead the Romance Genre. Typically in the past a book such as this would have been labeled Erotica, but now it's under the Contemporary Romance category. Please don't misunderstand me, I actually enjoyed this book and read along these lines as well as many other types of romance, but will it change what we consider romance?
Already we see competition for this book with Bared to You by Sylvia Day, and yes my own book Undercover Submissive, placing books with a similar theme of BDSM into the Contemporary category. I would have never thought to place my book anywhere but under Erotica prior to Fifty Shades of Grey. Now granted I think all of these books do have a theme of romance that falls outside of the Erotica label. When most readers that I've spoken with talk about Erotica they think more of books with no plot and centered around sex.
So what are we doing here? Are we as readers and authors stretching the limits on what is acceptable for romance, or is it that times are changing and BDSM is no longer the taboo subject it once was? I'm very curious and would like to hear your opinions. I created a message board on the Amazon Boards that you can reach here or feel free to leave comments at the end of this post.
